Cataracts

Cataracts are cloudy areas in the eye’s lens that can cause vision loss. They can affect one or both eyes, and symptoms include:

    • Blurry or double vision
    • Halos around lights
    • Difficulty seeing at night
    • Faded colors
    • Trouble reading
  • Sensitivity to glare
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions

Cataracts are very common, especially as people age. More than half of Americans over 80 have had a cataract or cataract surgery. However, they can also occur in babies, young children, and middle-aged adults.

Risk factors for cataracts include:

  • Too much exposure to sunlight
  • Smoking
  • Cortisone use
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
Cataracts can be treated with surgery, which involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens. Before surgery, you can try using brighter lighting, magnifying lenses, anti-glare sunglasses, or new glasses. Wearing sunglasses and a hat with a brim can also help delay cataracts.
